Welcome to Daytona Beach! Florida
Daytona
synonym with car racing was once founded by Matthias Day, Jr. of
Mansfield, Ohio, an inventor and newspaper publisher who bought land in
the Daytona area. Unfortunately he couldn't keep up the mortgage payments
and lost the property in 1872. His name stuck, however, when the residents
voted to incorporate in 1876 as the city of Daytona. Mid '20 car racing
became a swing of the lucky view and a regular beach racer, Bill France,
realized that the sophistication of modern auto racing demanded more than
the beach could provide and in 1953 started planning a world-class track
complex.
On
February 22, 1959 the first Daytona 500 was held in the new $3 million
facility. Today Daytona events are beamed by satellite all over the world.
Daytona USA, the museum of racing is a prime tourist attraction. The
entire length of the "World's Most Famous Beach" is devoted to
the normal seaside pleasures with glitter of a fun resort and the luxury
of first class accommodations. From the huge municipal marina to Jackie
Robinson Stadium (home of the Daytona Cubs) to four University campuses,
to expansive medical centers and the new world headquarters of Ladies
Professional Golf Association, there is something here for all. Mentioning
a few runs the risk of missing the important.
Daytona
is dedicated to serving the visitor.
